Why More Men Are Embracing Self-Care (And You Should Too)

Why More Men Are Embracing Self-Care (And You Should Too)

For far too long, self-care has been unfairly stereotyped and boxed into a narrow category; I know we're all thinking face masks, scented candles, and bubble baths, often marketed almost exclusively to women.

More and more men are boldly reclaiming space in the self-care conversation, and not just because it looks good on the ‘gram. From managing mental health and preserving healthy hair to building resilience and showing up confidently for oneself at work, at home, or in relationships, self-care is becoming essential, not optional. It’s a vital component of holistic well-being for everyone.

So, why now? And how can more men lean into routines that actually feel good and do good?

1. Why Men’s Self-Care Matters (Especially in 2025)

Let’s be honest: this year has been a lot. From rising global costs of living, relentless work pressures, and the constant digital noise, to unspoken personal battles and systemic challenges, burnout is real, and it’s hitting many of us.

In this relentless pace, self-care is no longer a luxury. It’s a survival tool, a proactive step towards building mental, emotional, and physical resilience. For Black men especially, the societal expectations to be strong, silent, and stoic have historically overshadowed crucial conversations around rest, emotional well-being, and physical care. This cultural conditioning can make it feel challenging, even vulnerable, to prioritise personal needs.

Taking time to genuinely care for yourself, whether that’s a meticulous beard trim, a soothing scalp massage, or simply ensuring you get enough restorative sleep- is a quiet, yet powerful, act of resistance in a world that often rarely gives men the explicit space to breathe, recharge, or express vulnerability. It’s about breaking cycles and setting a new precedent for health and wellness.

2. Easy and Affordable Self-Care Ideas for Black Men

You absolutely don’t need a spa membership or an arsenal of luxury skincare kits to start taking care of yourself. Self-care is about intention, consistency, and finding what truly recharges you.

Here’s a real-talk guide to accessible, low-effort ways to start incorporating self-care into your routine:

  • Weekly Beard Grooming Ritual:

Beyond just trimming, make beard care a weekly, meditative focus. Start with a dedicated beard wash or shampoo to cleanse thoroughly without stripping natural oils. Follow with a beard conditioner to soften and hydrate. Finish by applying a quality beard oil to moisturise the hair and the skin underneath, preventing itchiness and flakiness. A touch of beard balm can help shape and hold.

Why it Matters: A well-maintained beard not only boosts confidence, but the process itself can be a moment of mindful focus and quiet reflection, helping you de-stress.

  • Invigorating Facial Scrubs & Steam:

Incorporating an exfoliator once or twice a week is key for healthy skin, removing dead cells and preventing ingrown hairs (especially common for those who shave or have coarse facial hair). Follow up with a simple facial steam.

  • How to Steam (Warm Towel Trick): This is incredibly simple and effective. Fill a bowl with hot (but not scalding) water. You can add a few drops of essential oil, like tea tree or eucalyptus for an invigorating boost, or lavender for relaxation.
    • Method 1 (Bowl Steam): Drape a clean towel over your head, forming a tent over the bowl, and lean your face a safe distance over the steam for 5-10 minutes.
    • Method 2 (Warm Towel Trick): Dampen a clean hand towel with hot (but not scalding) water, wring out the excess until it's steamy but not dripping. Lie back and gently lay the warm towel over your face for 5-10 minutes. This is fantastic for opening pores, softening beard hair before a trim, or just unwinding.

Why it Matters: Steaming opens your pores for a deeper cleanse, improves circulation, and enhances product absorption. It's a quick, budget-friendly way to deeply cleanse, hydrate, and relax your facial muscles.

  • Scalp Massage After a Long Week:

Whether you’re rocking locs, braids, a short fade, or a full afro, a little scalp love goes a long way. Use your fingertips to gently massage your scalp in circular motions for 5-10 minutes. You can do this during your shampooing routine, or by applying a few drops of a light scalp oil (like jojoba, peppermint, or tea tree oil blend) directly to the scalp. Consider using a dedicated scalp massager for an extra boost.

Why it Matters: A scalp massage is magic for stimulating blood circulation to the hair follicles (which can promote healthier growth), relieving tension headaches, reducing dryness and itchiness, and distributing natural oils. It’s a truly relaxing and beneficial ritual.

  • TTAT During Deep Conditioning:

After shampooing, apply your favourite deep conditioner or hair mask. Then, slide on a TTAT shower cap.

Why it Matters: Our uniquely designed TTAT shower caps are roomy enough for your protective styles, locs, or fro – ensuring no hair gets left behind! The cap traps your natural body heat, creating a gentle steaming effect. This lifts the hair cuticles, allowing the nourishing ingredients from your conditioner to penetrate much deeper into the hair shaft, maximising moisture absorption. This means softer, stronger, and more manageable hair, especially crucial for textured hair, which tends to be drier.

  • Spa Night on a Budget:

You don’t need to break the bank for relaxation. Grab your partner or a close friend, some hot towels (see trick above!), herbal tea (or whiskey — no judgment!), and unwind with calming music or even a guided meditation tutorial from YouTube. You could also try an affordable Epsom salt foot soak.

Why it Matters: It’s about intention, not expense. Creating a peaceful, intentional space to unwind and decompress helps reset your mind and body.

3. TTAT’s Role in Men’s Self-Care

Here’s the truth: most shower caps weren’t made with you in mind, especially if you’ve got thick hair, long locs, braids, or an afro. They're often too small, flimsy, and just don't get the job done, leading to soggy hairlines and ruined styles.

That’s precisely why we created TTAT. We design genuinely unisex, durable, and truly waterproof shower caps in Extra-Large and Jumbo sizes so you can protect your crown without sacrificing comfort, style, or peace of mind.

Whether you're deep conditioning to boost hair health, keeping your carefully styled hair dry during a quick shower, or just enjoying a steamy bath without getting your hair wet, TTAT has you covered (literally!). Our shower caps are made with a double-layered waterproof PU lining, are mould-resistant, and built for lasting reuse. They’re low-key, sleek, and engineered to perform.

Because self-care can be subtle, but it should never be secondary, and it should always be effective.

So, going forward, remember ladies and gents in particular, self-care doesn’t need to be loud, expensive, or overcomplicated. It can be as simple as gently oiling your scalp, wrapping your hair at night (perhaps with a silk scarf or bonnet!), or taking a few intentional moments to breathe and reset.

This June, we’re honouring Men’s Month by celebrating Black men who are showing the world that care is not gendered — it’s human. And if you’ve never felt truly invited to this conversation before, consider this your official welcome.
